Alaska

helping alaska live up to its fullest

A Homegrown Mission

Our mission at home is rooted in Alaska’s constitution – working to ensure that our resources are used for the maximum benefit of our citizens. We conduct research, education and training programs, facilitate public discourse, and advocate on important policy issues. All of this work aims to help Alaska live up to its fullest potential as an Owner State. Over the past thirty years, the Institute has worked on issues ranging from security and energy and fisheries, to biodiversity, land management and fiscal policy.

Alaska and the Owner State

Alaska’s founders pioneered a form of resource governance, based on common ownership and state stewardship. We call this the Owner State model. It has helped Alaska take charge of its own destiny, build infrastructure, and raise the standard of living for many. It is a model which depends on the engagement of its citizen owners, which is why the Institute works to educate, facilitate discussions, and cultivate connections between the public, academia, industry and government.

To learn more about the Owner State, explore our efforts to share this model with the developing world.
