Arctic Indigenous Exchange Program

Application deadline is April 12, 2026 @ 8pm EDT.

About AIEP

The Arctic Indigenous Exchange Program (AIEP) brings together groups of 12-15 Indigenous community members, leaders, and professionals, for exchanges across Canada, Greenland, and the United States (Alaska).  The U.S. Department of State is the program sponsor.  The goal is to explore areas of regional cooperation across the Arctic. AIEP aims to strengthen people-to-people relationships, advance cooperation, and foster greater cultural and commercial ties among Arctic Indigenous populations across a range of priority areas.

Upcoming Exchange

This upcoming AIEP exchange will take place May to August 2026 with participants from Canada, Greenland, and the United States (Alaska).  The 4-month exchange will include monthly virtual seminars with knowledge holders and a community-based workshop in Greenland in mid-August, 2026. This exchange seeks to foster greater ties between Arctic Indigenous business communities in Canada, Greenland, and the United States (Alaska) through discussions, projects, and education on the many economic opportunities related to harvest and tourism.

What You Will Gain

  • Access rich opportunities for knowledge-sharing and mutual learning
  • Share approaches to address common regional challenges
  • Foster lasting partnerships among emerging and mid-career Indigenous leaders from Canada, Greenland and the United States (Alaska)
  • Gather in Qaqortoq, South Greenland, August 16-21, 2026 (all travel paid for)

What To Expect

AIEP 2026 is a 4-month program running from May to August.

Our theme is the Harvest Economy. Harvesting is rooted in food gathering, land stewardship, and cultural practice, and remains a core economic and cultural foundation for Indigenous peoples across  Canada, Greenland and the United States (Alaska). Harvesting represents a shared opportunity to build resilience and support new avenues for economic growth.

We will explore how the Harvest Economy relates to economic development, community resilience, and the environment. Sub-themes include food security, stable tourism, commercial harvesting, government support, and cultural significance.
